In April of 2016, longing for a warm and early Spring that, apparently, was not about to happen, I decided to try something dramatic to create a bright and happy mood. I also wanted to make something completely different from what I had been doing.
My approach was to try painting without using any of the usual tools like brushes, palette knives, even an easel. The floor of my studio became my “easel,” and the paint was applied using various little bottles. Gravity was the main tool. Controlling it was the greatest challenge. I used the darker colors first, and gradually worked up to the lighter ones. I found that the drops and splashes were pretty interesting and the overall spontaneity was a nice effect.
I did not set out to create flowers and trees, but eventually that’s what appeared in an impressionistic sort of way. April was no longer a gloomy month.
